What is bioavailability?

Bioavailability refers to the amount of a nutrient that is available for your body to use. When you take a vitamin in pill form, only a small percentage of that vitamin is actually absorbed and used by your body. You may have noticed bright yellow wee after taking a vitamin pill before. That’s because the majority of the vitamins aren’t being absorbed and are passing right through you! Food state vitamins are different. They are made from whole foods and their nutrients are bound to other nutrients in a way that makes them much more bioavailable. This means that your body can absorb and use a greater percentage of the nutrients in food state vitamins, leading to better health!

Why are food state vitamins are more bioavailable?

There are two main reasons that food state vitamins are more bioavailable. Firstly, because they are in a form that our bodies are adapted to digest & absorb, and secondly because they are accompanied by other compounds that improve absorption or efficacy.

In a form our bodies recognise

Our bodies did not evolve to digest & absorb pure nutrients. Most multivitamin pills are made from cheap artificial, lab synthesised compounds that are alien to our bodies and microbiome. These aren’t digested readily and often pass straight through. Food state vitamins are in a form that our bodies recognise and can easily digest. Accompanied by natural cofactors

Perhaps it’s nature giving us a helping hand, perhaps it’s the evolution of our bodies, but very often we absorb more of a specific nutrient when it comes with the other compounds present in food than a pure version. For example, studies show that Turmeric is more potent than pure Curcumin (the active compound in Turmeric) – scientists don’t fully understand why…yet. Plant sources of Iron are less easily absorbed, unless accompanied by Vitamin C.

High doses of synthetic nutrients risks toxic overload

Large doses of certain isolated nutrients can be toxic – for example, Vitamin A (Retinol) and Synthetic Vitamin B12. Food state vitamins contain lower doses of nutrients (you won’t see 1200% RDA on our packs!), and as they are bound to other natural compounds, the risk of toxic overload is greatly reduced.

Food state vitamins will (generally) have fewer bulking agents & no whitening agents

100% of your RDA of Vitamin D3 weighs 5 μg – that’s 0.000005 grams, or 1/1000th of a grain of sand. To create a pill that you can actually see and pick up, many supplement manufacturers need to pad out their pills with some kind of filler or bulking agent to make up the rest. These bulking agents can be anything from Calcium Carbonate (or chalk to you and I) to Silicon Dioxide (yep.. sand.)

As they are contained within a complex structure already, food state vitamins will generally have fewer bulking agents and no whitening agents, as these are not necessary for the nutrient to be effective. There’s absolutely none in FOGA shakes because, well, they’re not pills!

Always interrogate ingredient lists as closely as you interrogate the nutritional table – good manufacturers will be proud of the ingredients they use and want you to read them closely!
